What a trigger point is
Overuse, repetitive movement, poor posture or a hit can leave part of a muscle’s fibers permanently contracted. Picture a strand of yarn with a knot: it gets shorter. The same happens in the muscle: the knotted fiber shortens, the muscle loses flexibility, hurts to the touch and limits movement.
The striking part is referred pain: a trigger point can hurt far away from where it sits. Certain points in the side neck muscle, for example, can cause headaches around the eye or behind the ears. That is why persistent pain calls for looking for its source in a specific muscle.
The technique was studied and developed by Dr. Janet Travell and is related to acupressure and shiatsu. Active points hurt at rest and send pain elsewhere; latent points only hurt when pressed but still shorten the muscle.
What a session looks like
- 01LocateWe palpate the muscle guided by the pain pattern you describe, and show you where the point is and where it sends pain.
- 02PressDeep, sustained pressure on the point for 5 to 30 seconds.
- 03Adjust with youIt is interactive: we ask how much it bothers you and adjust until the tissue releases.
- 04StretchWe finish with stretches to return the muscle to its normal length.
