During pregnancy
Weight goes up, the center of gravity shifts and the body holds more fluid. Hence back and hip pain, swollen legs and fatigue. Prenatal massage, side-lying with pillows, eases those discomforts and lowers stress.
It is safe when the pregnancy is low-risk, the adapted technique is used and your doctor approves. We explain it trimester by trimester in is prenatal massage safe?.
After birth
After birth all the attention goes to the baby, but the mother needs to recover too: reduce swelling, relieve the back and rest. Postpartum massage combines physical recovery, emotional wellbeing and scar care.
If you had a C-section, the scar is worked once it is fully closed and with medical clearance. Details in C-section scar: when and how to work on it.
Your mood matters
Feeling sad or sensitive in the first weeks is common. If the sadness is intense, lasts more than two weeks or you feel you cannot cope, talk to your doctor: postpartum depression can be treated.
For your baby
Infant massage is very gentle touch that helps with colic, gas, teething and sleep, and strengthens the bond. The basic strokes are in baby colic massage.
For babies born early there is an even gentler approach: premature baby massage, always with the neonatologist’s approval.
