Pregnancy is a beautiful stage and a demanding one for the body. Back pain, heavy hips, swollen legs, sleepless nights. Many moms-to-be in Elizabeth and nearby ask us whether they can get a massage and whether it is safe for the baby. Here are the answers.
Yes, it is safe… with three conditions
- Your pregnancy is low-risk.
- Your doctor approves it.
- A pregnancy-adapted technique is used.
With those three conditions, prenatal massage is a gentle, safe way to ease discomfort and lower stress.
From which week?
Usually from the second trimester, as your doctor advises. The first trimester brings many changes and many professionals prefer to wait.
In what position?
From a certain point in pregnancy you do not lie face down, nor on your back for long. We work mostly side-lying, with pillows supporting your belly, back and legs. Pressure is gentle and enveloping, and we avoid deep pressure on the legs.
Benefits
- Relief for back, hip and neck pain.
- Less swelling and heaviness in legs and feet.
- Less stress and anxiety.
- Better rest.
- A space to connect with yourself and your baby.
Caring for the mother’s emotional wellbeing is also caring for the pregnancy: long-lasting stress can affect her health.
When it is not recommended
- High-risk pregnancy.
- Vaginal bleeding or early contractions.
- Preeclampsia or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
- Placenta problems.
- A blood clot or suspected clot, fever or infection.
If in doubt, check with your doctor first.
And after birth
Once the baby arrives, all the attention goes to them. But you need care too. Our postpartum massage helps reduce swelling, relieve your back and care for a C-section or stitches scar, always with medical clearance.
