Fibrosis after liposuction: what it is, how to spot it and how to help prevent it

Firm areas, lumps or unevenness under the skin: why they appear and what helps prevent them.

Marta C. team

It is one of the scariest words after liposuction: fibrosis. Many clients come to us in Elizabeth, New Jersey, asking what it is, whether it is normal and what they can do. Here is the calm explanation.

What fibrosis is

When the body heals internally after surgery, it builds new tissue. Sometimes that tissue hardens more than it should, forming firm areas, lumps or unevenness under the skin. That is fibrosis. It is one of the complications that most affects the aesthetic result of liposuction or lipo-sculpting, because the skin does not adapt evenly to the new shape.

Adhesions can come with it: the internal scar “glues” tissue layers together, limiting movement or leaving the skin tight.

How to spot it

  • Areas that feel hard, like plates or cords under the skin.
  • Visible unevenness: ripples or dimples.
  • A tight or “stuck” feeling in the skin.
  • Areas that stay swollen after the rest has gone down.

If you notice this, tell your surgeon and your therapist. The sooner it is worked on, the better.

Why it happens

Many factors play a part: the type and extent of surgery, how each body heals and, above all, how the fluid that builds up in the following weeks is managed. When edema stays in the area for a long time, tissues tend to harden.

How post-op massage helps

Post-operative care aims for three things: clearing the fluid, keeping tissues soft while they heal and letting the skin adapt. Lymphatic drainage takes care of the first from the early sessions. Later, when your surgeon approves, manual techniques are added to soften tissue and refine the contour.

In our post-surgical care we check swelling and firm areas at every visit and adapt the intensity to how you are healing.

What you can do

  • Start post-op care when your surgeon says so, without delaying it.
  • Wear your compression garment as instructed.
  • Be consistent: several sessions over the weeks work better than a single one.
  • Stay hydrated, move gently and watch your salt.

Honesty first

At Marta C. we do not sell miracles. Massage helps prevent and improve fibrosis, but every body heals at its own pace and the final result also depends on the surgery. What we do promise is careful support, coordinated with your surgeon, with real follow-up. To learn more, read our guide on drainage after lipo or a BBL.
